3. EDFA (Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifier)

Erbium-doped fiber amplifier is another optical amplifier that contains erbium ions in its core. This optical amplifier features low noise and high gains with independent polarization. It can amplify signals in a 1.58 μm or 1.55 μm band.

EDFA is a common optical amplifier as it directly amplifies signals without converting them to optical and electrical processes. This boosts the fiber optic communication capacity.
